All academic teachers are special education certified, by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Our program uses an effective highly regarded alternative to traditional methods of instruction. This approach is well-suited to meet the individual educational needs of students, especially within the context of a comprehensive Individual Educational Plan (IEP).Math
YBEC utilizes the Saxon Math Program. The Program ranges in levels from basic through advanced Math. It is highly recognized for exceeding State Curriculum Standards. The Saxon math program is in part designed for students with difficulties in retention, while focusing towards progress needed in order to be successful on the PSSA's.English
YBEC has an in depth Literature Program, ranging from the classics such as Of Mice and Men, Catcher in the Rye, and The Taming of the Shrew, to name a few. High school literature has included authors such as Shakespeare, and Chaucer, The middle school has covered the Gary Paulsen series such as Brian's Winter, Brian's Hunt, and Brian's Return. The collection of literature grows every year at YBEC in order to avoid repetition for returning students. Along with literature, there is a strong emphasis placed on writing. Students work daily on writing skills to meet the necessary PSSA requirements. YBEC utilizes two different reading programs. The Wilson Reading Program is utilized for some students, while others have had more success with the SRA Direct Reading Program. YBEC does everything possible to cross-match programming from a student’s home district.
YBEC offers a variety of Science subjects; (1 yearly) Biology, Earth/Space and Environmental Science. Students attending the Fair Oaks facility maintain a greenhouse, which was awarded by grant money from PDE as an ecology project. Students learn and actively grow plants throughout the school year. Middle school students participate in a comparable curriculum to the high school students. They participate in a general science class which provides an introduction to the senior high courses. YBEC purchases all text from Pacemaker and Glencoe Publishing.
YBEC provides subjects (1 yearly) in the following areas; American History, World History, Geography and American Government. All texts are purchased through the Glencoe and Pacemaker Publishing.Electives
Students in grades sixth through twelfth are provided with a music class. Music is offered one time a week, providing students the opportunity to create music with keyboarding equipment, computer sound, and audio recording equipment. Students are taught how music is created in a studio. This class provides students the opportunity for appropriate self expression. Students will successfully create their own music CD using their own original songs by the end of the course.
Students are taught various aspects and media of art including art history, photography, painting, mural design and ceramics. YBEC own and utilizes a pottery wheel and kiln.
All YBEC locations have computer labs. Students are taught keyboarding and basic computer skills. Students are also taught to safely navigate the web and use the Internet for their academic classes.Additional Electives
